MERCEDES LAUNCHES AMG SPORT TO FIGHT BMW’S M PERFORMANCE; TEASES GLE COUPE

BMW has done very well filling the gap between regular models and M cars with its M Performance range, as has Audi with its S-badged cars and Cadillac with Vsport offerings. Mercedes is planning to follow suit with its new AMG Sport sub-brand, which will slot in between stock Benzes and AMG high-performance cars. The first two AMG Sport models will debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in January, based on the C-Class sedan and upcoming GLE Coupe. The latter, a rival to the BMW X6, has yet to be revealed but was previewed by the Concept Coupe SUV that debuted in Beijing. Sharing engines with the regular Mercedes cars on which they’ll be based, AMG Sport models will be differentiated with more power, a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded wheels and brakes, and enhanced aerodynamics. All-wheel drive will also come as standard. As well as teasing the GLE-Class Coupe, Mercedes has provided a comparison between the faces of the C-Class AMG Sport (expected to be badged the C450 AMG Sport) and the all-new Mercedes-AMG C63.
